Just like in the iconic movie, Field of Dreams, some people believe that just because they build a website that people will come. Unfortunately, it's not quite as easy as that. But there are some simple ways you can drive traffic to your website. Here are just a few of them.
Give Them a Reason to Come... and Come Back
The reason why anyone will visit your website is because it contains information they want to read or see or hear. So step one for driving traffic is always to create great content and keep updating your pages often. The best way to keep them coming back is by posting various types of content: blogs, articles, audio messages, video clips, pictures, etc. The more your site offers, the more visitors it will attract naturally.
Use Social Media
The latest internet marketing craze of the past several years has been social media and it shows no signs of slowing in popularity anytime soon. So it's essential for the small business owner with an online presence to at least have a Facebook page, a Twitter account, a LinkedIn profile and a Google+ page. And those pages and profiles need to be updated on a regular basis, preferably with shareable content that links back to your web pages.
Guest Blogging
You might have a blog on your own website and that's great - but have you thought about posting a guest blog on someone else's site? This does two really valuable things for your marketing efforts: 1. Your content reaches a new market; and 2. It builds an inbound link to your site via adding a URL to your signature line or "About Us" blurb. Both are excellent ways of driving traffic and building links is good SEO, too.
Directory Listings
Many internet users turn to aggregation sites, such as phone book advertising, community and association pages to find reputable vendors. Make sure your business is listed at most of them in order to capture the largest volume of online traffic for your goods or services.
Press Releases and Articles
Here's one last way to drive traffic to your site and establish yourself as an authority in a particular market niche: write press releases and articles and distribute them online. There are many free sites to which you can submit your pieces and include a link to your website, but be careful about selecting only those with a good reputation and high page ranking.
Just building a website is half the battle; the other is getting visitors to it in the hopes they will eventually make a purchase. By spending a bit of time and maybe a little money, you are bound to see the amount of traffic to your site increase - and that should increase your conversion rate.
